Four Germans Charged for Operating Elysium

The Public Prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt has charged four men for running the now-defunct darknet child abuse forum “Elysium.” All four have been charged for administration, development, and moderation of the forum. That have also been charged for distributing child abuse material. And one has been charged for physically abusing two children while holding an administrative position on the forum.

Tabooless Member is Identifying Suspects for Police

An ongoing case at the district court of Freiburg has revealed more information about members of Tabooless Chat as well as the investigation that ended the site. The case focused on the abuse of a child in Staufen but recent developments revealed that many of the suspects had met on Tabooless, used Tabooless actively, and possibly held administrative (or similar) positions. During the hearings, the investigators revealed that on September 10, 2017, _someone_ had sent a tip to the LKA and BKA that contained pictures, videos, and information on the identity of the Tabooless administrator named “Commander.

BKA: Fighting Darknet Child Abuse Forums

Matthias Wenz, Deputy Head of a unit of the German Federal Police dedicated to crimes against children, talked about the current state of child abuse on the clearnet and darknet. He spoke about the limitations in child pornography investigations, the victims of these crimes, and the changes needed in punishing child pornography law violations. He said some things likely overlooked by the general public and controversial to others: He questioned the use of investigative techniques employed in the operations that brought down Playpen, The Love Zone, and Childs Play.

Tabooless Chat Admin Sentenced to Prison

According to several German media outlets, the 50-year-old moderator or administrator of the darknet child abuse chatroom “Tabooless Chat” received a prison sentence of three and a half years for his role in moderating the site. According to evidence revealed in the courtroom, the man confessed to his crimes and had actually been in police custody since November 2017. Roughly one week ago, I wrote about the takedown of the site.

German Police Bust Darknet Child Abuse Site

German authorities have somewhat of skill when it comes to taking down darknet child abuse forums and chatrooms. The German Federal Criminal Police Office recently took down Elysium. Now, Hanover police and the Hanover Public Prosecutor took down a massive child abuse chatroom with tens of thousands of members. They have also arrested two administrators. The investigation followed a tip Hanover police received in 2017. A member of the chatroom called “Tabooless Chat” accidentally leaked his information in the chat and an unknown third party—a civilian—sent that information to Hanover authorities.

Reddit Bans Darknetmarkets Subreddit

Reddit, in a not entirely surprising move, banned the go-to /r/darknetmarkets subreddit. The subreddit was one of the few that prohibited sourcing and made it through some of Reddit’s previous ban streaks. One “official” subreddit remains: /r/DarkNetMarketsNoobs The ban followed the ban of other (mostly drug) subreddits that either directly or indirectly permitted users to trade/buy/sell illegal items or material that violated Reddit’s TOS. Despite the noise created by former users of the subreddit, the darknetmarkets sub was far from the only subreddit to receive a ban in less than an hour after an unexpected rule change where Reddit staff intentionally banned before speaking with the subreddit moderators.
