South Dakota Man Avoids Jail in Heroin Importation Case

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken sentenced a South Dakota man to time served after he pleaded guilty to importing heroin and fentanyl purchased on the darkweb

Nathan Reuer, 26, of Rapid City according to court records began ordering drugs on the darkweb in February 2018. The defendant’s activities were discovered and put to an end in February 2019 following an investigation led by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

In late December 2018 and early January 2019, the investigators seized four packages addressed to the defendant. Three of the packages tested positive for fentanyl while the fourth one tested positive for methamphetamine.

“This is not the primary means for people in our area to obtain illegal drugs, but I would still consider it to be a common way for some people to obtain them,” Taylor Sperle, a Pennington County sheriff’s sergeant.

On January 23, 2019, authorities executed a search warrant at the defendant’s home. The search led to the seizure of 800 grams of “a synthetic substances similar to MDMA”, a scale, unidentified pills, steroids, needles, droppers, and mailing materials. The officers also recovered five kilograms of kratom.

The investigators also found a PC in one of the defendant’s rooms with the Tor Browser open. Analysis of the PC led to the discovery of four bitcoin wallets.

A sample of the defendant’s urine was subsequently taken and tested. The urine tested positive for methamphetamine, THC, and unspecified opiates.

CBP officers reportedly continued intercepting addressed to the defendant even after the search. The last package arrived in February 2019 from Canada and carried an undisclosed quantity of fentanyl-laced heroin.

Reuer was charged with importation of controlled substances and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, fentanyl, and heroin. His detention hearing took place on February 4 2019 and the judge ruled that he be detained pending trial. The defendant’s appeal to the ruling was denied.

Reuer pleaded guilty to two counts of importation of heroin and fentanyl in February 2020.

On June 4, the defendant was sentenced to a prison sentence equal to time served in pre-trial detention, three years of supervised release, restitution, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Wow, multiple interceptions- and containing Fent (they get a big hard on for Fent)
not to mention paraphenalia and shipping materials so possible distribution.

AND they supposedly continued to intercept packages as late as the detention hearing. He served 1 year while waiting for his sentencing trial, which they considered that 1 year served good enough and slapped on 3 years supervised release and a small amount of $$

Anyone know this guys lawyer??
He got off lucky in my opinion

He probably was in a 12 step recovery program while on the inside. Lawyer blamed addiction. The kid is young, probably first offense.

What I find most shocking is this is the first publicized arrest of a personal usage amount buyer, in the US anyway. Common school of thought is/was; “there’s bigger fish than me to fry, they’re not going to waste all their resources on little ‘ol me, are they?” . . . the answer now is … maybe.

800 grams of synthetic mdma is not a personal amount.....you must have missed that part of the story.

Maybe the 800 grams of “a synthetic substances similar to MDMA” was a legal research chem.

He was certainly lucky

or he could be a narc and setup other local/domestic people?? sold out his buddies... if they found 4 wallets, an open TOR browser and fent interception I can not fathom a lawyer being able to pull that off. sorry, just don't buy it. plenty of young kids get nabbed for a lot less and do a lot more time. fishy fishy.

He definitely informed on his associates and was dealing. Coupled with the fact he had a good mouthpiece no doubt. The Judge in the case would have had a "Letter of Comfort" handed to him without anyone else in the court room realizing which informed him of the defendants role in helping the police by providing information on other, bigger criminals he knew of for a sentencing reduction.

Miss Information- (what an appropriate username...) he is certainly not the first personal use buyer bust in the US. Search for Torin Finver- in his case, it was truly non-distribution amounts (like 3g heroin 2g coke in 3 packages or something like that). I'm sure it didn't help that he was an addictions medicine doctor....

Where do all you low IQ dolts come up with the notion this was for personal use? No where in this article does it state how much fent or opiates he had! In fact, it clearly state "undisclosed" amount of these drugs and that had steroids, scale (A big no-no), and other stuff, so the fact that any of you would even think this guy was a personal user is absurd! He was a distributor, and most likely via the dark web, which is why he had mailing stuff so he could send it, and probably sold on the streets. Does anyone actually read anymore? Or does everyone think they are special and psychics and shit lol
